The STAR 1-5 program offers the best-in-class figure skating curriculum in Canada, targeting athletes looking for a future in the sport. Taught by Skate Canada NCCP coaches, the program introduces participants to the basic figure skating elements to create the foundation for singles, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating.

Skaters moving our of CanSkate/Future Stars can register for Rideau's STAR A StarSkate sessions. STAR A sessions include off ice warm ups, cool downs and 30 minutes of instruction. Skaters in the StarSkate program MUST purchase additional coaching through RSC's coaching team. 

Skaters in the StarSkate program are encouraged to skate at least two to three times per week + off ice. 

Skaters in the STAR 1-5 program can be assessed in five disciplines on regular sessions by our coaches. Assessments occur when skaters are ready, allowing them to progress at their own pace.

STAR 6 - Gold is an assessment and event structure for skaters who have completed the STAR 1-5 Program. This structure builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.

The STAR 6 to Gold assessments build on the foundations learned in STAR 1 to 5. Assessments are offered in Freeskate, Skills, Dance, and Artistic. At the STAR 6 to Gold levels, Dance and FreeSkate assessments are conducted by external evaluators on designated assessment days. However, qualified coach assessors are permitted to evaluate Skills and Artistic disciplines up to the Gold level.

Skaters in the StarSkate program MUST purchase additional coaching through RSC's coaching team. 

Skaters in the StarSkate program are encouraged to skate at least three times per week + off ice.

Our figure skating program features the following pathways to develop your full potential:

Skills: A discipline for assessments that allows skaters to explore turns, steps, field moves and more. Skills is the foundation to all other disciplines.

Singles (Freeskate): Single skating is where individual creativity shines through in the art of freeskate. It’s the most recognized form of our sport, showcasing personal style and athleticism on the ice.

Pairs: Two skaters join forces here to create a mesmerizing display of teamwork and skill. From lifts to throws, this discipline combines the beauty of technical ability and collaboration.

Ice Dance: Inspired by ballroom dancing, ice dance blends rhythm, athleticism and elegance, allowing skaters to express themselves through captivating performances set to some of your favourite songs.

Synchronized: Synchronized skating, or “synchro,” is a dynamic team discipline where groups of eight or more skaters move as one, executing beautifully fluid circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections to music. Open to all ages and skill levels, it celebrates unity and teamwork on and off the ice.

Artistic: This discipline allows skaters to show their artistry through movement, creativity, projection, and musicality.

This program builds off of the foundations of the STAR 1-5, STAR 6-Gold and AdultSkate programs. The program is designed for skaters actively competing in STAR 3 and above and Adult Bronze Freeskate and above. 

The focus of these training sessions will be on developing competition skills to prepare skaters wanting to compete regularly in STAR 3, STAR 4, the Provincial STARSkate Series, or the ISU Adult Figure Skating Competition events.

The number of skaters in the program has been set at a level to promote regular training of competition programs and to help skaters push for more speed, power, and ice coverage in their training.

The instructor fees for the off-ice portions of the program, 5 minute on ice FreeSkate warm up and 15 minute group lesson are included in the registration fees.

To be eligible, skaters must be:

• Competing in the STAR 3 level and above, Adult Bronze Freeskate level or higher
• Skating a minimum of 2 days per week (excluding Saturdays)
• Participating in a qualifying off-ice program. Qualifying off-ice programs include
  • Any Rideau Skating Club off-ice program (excluding Saturdays)
  • Gymnastics
  • Martial Arts
  • Dance
  • Regularly scheduled fitness classes (Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, etc.)
